Russia-Ukraine Rift and Effects on India

Published on : February 27, 2022

The big breaking news airing on all the News channels is all about the recent invasion of Ukraine being attempted by Russia at the moment. Every hour, there is a new update regarding bombings and attacks taking place in Ukraine. Amidst all the chaos regarding Russia’s intention to invade Ukraine, there are too many debates regarding the consequences of this war.

One such speculation is regarding India’s position in the World with regards to safety and economy. With concerns to safety, there isn’t much of a harm because the Prime Minister, while having a conversation with Russia’s President, made a request for the safety of Indians in Ukraine. With the passage of time, even attempts from Indian Government is visible being made for evacuation purposes. However, the concern regarding economy seems to be a bigger speculation starting with the rise in oil prices. "Oil prices will rise resulting in an increase in input costs and that could impact the Indian economy that is just coming out of the COVID-19 impact," said Parthasarathi.[1] Among the total oil needs in India, around eighty percent is from imports. After the massive financially pressurizing situation like COVID, the fuel hike will shake the economy of the country largely.

Although India buys a minimal amount of oil from Russia, the effects will still be noticeable and along with oil, the prices with regards to food will also rise. However, on the political front, India is put in a position of dilemma amidst this war. Indian Government largely depends upon Moscow, Russia for the production of arms and weapons and hence, moving against Russia at this point of time may cost India a lot. On the other hand, the United States of America has abstained from aiding Russia in this war and has stated that the world will blame Russia for the consequences. Keeping this in mind and the fact that India has developed great friendly relations with America in the past few years, it is extremely difficult for India to pick a side. Even in the year 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea, India abstained from picking a side because of political strategies. India also needs to have good relations with Russia and America both in order to defend itself from China considering the leverage these both countries can have over China. It is not easy for India to actually pick a side at this point of time owing to its own safety and security.
