Snippets from the Constitution Day

On the 26th of November, the Supreme Court Bar Association organised an event in observance of the Constitution Day which is also recognised as the National Law Day. This day is observed in remembrance of the day the Constitution was adopted in India. On this event, there have been several speeches made by the Prime Minister, the Union Law Minister, the Chief Justice of India and several other notable delegates.

One of the important parts of the event was when the Union Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju, mentioned that legal education should be imparted in local language. He furthered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement to mention that the court proceedings should also be carried out in local language so that the common man feels connected. The Law Minister aso stated that Under the aegis of the Law Ministry, the Bar Council of India has set up a Bharatiya Bhasha Committee headed by former Chief Justice of India SA Bobde.[1] He also ensured that the independence of judiciary shall be protected from the Central Government’s end and that there is no point in creating a tussle between the Judiciary and the Executive.

In the same event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also stated, "Our Constitution is youth-centric. It is the youth who are entrusted to develop our nation. It is our duty to make the youth understand the Constitution better.”[2] He emphasized on explaining that the spirit of the Constitution reflected from its Preamble and dealt with amicable co-existance which is necessary for the youth to understand. In addition to the same, he also went on to mention the role of women in drafting of the Constitution and named several women drafters of the Constituent Assembly.

Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud,J., in his speech, spoke about the collegium and its quality. He stated that the judiciary should have such people who are highly appealable for the younger members of the Bar and there isn’t any system which is perfect. Keeping that in view, the collegium system is a better option than others as judges are the ‘faithful soldiers’ of the Constitution. He also mentioned that the ‘sense of fulfilment’ is what should encourage the younger mass to join the judiciary and not the salary or other perks.

In addition to the above, there were several other points raised in the event. However, these are very significant with regards to the recent updates regarding the legal system in India.
